A long day at university or in the office, sightseeing on holiday, or hiking – a heavy backpack not only slows you down but can also put strain on your back in the long run. Understandably, you want to be prepared for every scenario during your trip and have all your essentials with you – but you should also pay attention to weight limits here.

When Does Heavy Become Too Heavy?

It sounds paradoxical, but just because your backpack's volume allows it, you shouldn't always make full use of it. At some point, you reach your physical limit. Pain in the back, neck, shoulders, or general exhaustion can be signals your body sends when it reaches its load limit. As a rough rule of thumb, your backpack should not be heavier than 10–20% of your body weight. If you weigh 70 kilograms, your luggage should not weigh more than 14 kilograms. For people who are physically trained, a maximum of 25% of body weight is considered an acceptable sustained load – that would be 17.5 kilograms at 70 kilograms of body weight.

Now you know your limit – you just need to pay attention to the correct distribution. Don't worry, you've got us! And the following step-by-step guide:

  1. Choose the right backpack: A well-fitting backpack is important so that the weight is distributed optimally across your body and carrying comfort is improved. Your backpack should therefore be perfectly adjusted to your height and the model should not be too large for you.

  2. Plan ahead: Think carefully about what you really need and which items you can do without, because they'll literally drag you down. Over a longer period of time, you should not carry more than 20–25% of your body weight.

  3. Make use of storage space: If you use all the space in and on the backpack, the weight of your luggage is also better distributed.

  4. Pay attention to accessibility & organisation: Smartphone, water bottle, sunscreen – what do you want to have quickly to hand? Store these things in easily accessible pockets so you don't have to rummage through all your luggage. Also pack similar items together to bring order to your belongings.

How to Pack a Backpack: Guide for Optimal Weight Distribution

So that your backpack doesn't pull backwards when you're carrying it, the centre of gravity should ideally be close to your body and at shoulder height. This way it is above your body's centre of gravity. Sounds complicated? It's actually quite simple – just divide the backpack into three sections:

BOTTOM

Light but bulky items, such as a sleeping bag, jacket, picnic blanket, or neck pillow, find their place here.

MIDDLE

Medium-weight items, such as a tent, towels, fleece jacket, or warm clothing, can be placed above the lighter items. Practical tip: Packing cubes protect your clothing from moisture and help keep things organised. This way you don't have to take out every single T-shirt to get to the sleeping bag. Heavy items are best packed in the middle at shoulder blade height. This spot is perfect for cooking equipment, water bottles, and provisions. If you're going hiking on a steep route, we recommend storing the main weight of your luggage slightly lower, so it sits in the middle of your back.

TOP

Things you need quickly and frequently should be stored in the upper section of your backpack so they're easy to reach. These can include your wallet, phone, or headphones. Use the gaps in your luggage for small and light essentials so that as little as possible can shift around. The weight of your backpack should also be well balanced horizontally. This helps prevent falls.

Now you have an idea of how heavy your backpack may be and how to pack it properly. All you need to do now is plan your next hiking route and hope for good weather!

FAQ

How do I carry a backpack correctly?

Once you've found the right backpack size, packed your model correctly, and distributed the weight evenly, it's time to adjust the straps. The shoulder straps should be secure but not too tight and should lie comfortably on your shoulders without digging in. With the help of a chest strap and hip belt, you distribute the weight evenly across your body and ensure greater stability. Your backpack should not protrude above your shoulders, but should also not hang too low on your back. On longer routes, take regular breaks to remove the backpack and relieve your shoulders and back.

What is gentler on the back: a backpack or a bag?

A backpack is gentler on the back. A bag carried on one side distributes weight unevenly across the body, leading to poor posture, which in turn can cause long-term pain and even injuries in the shoulder and back area.
