When does a rucksack count as hand luggage?

Online you will find various recommendations about rucksack size and capacity. But there is no standardised hand luggage specification. Each airline determines its own rules about the weight, size and number of items of hand luggage. Nevertheless, the 55-35-20 rule was created to provide travellers with guidance. According to this principle, your hand luggage backpack must not exceed the specified 55 x 35 x 20 centimetres in height x width x depth.

The capacity or litre-volume of the backpack don't matter — all that counts are the dimensions and weight. The maximum guide value here is eight to ten kilograms. Budget airlines such as Ryanair only allow small hand luggage measuring 40 x 20 x 25 cm. If you want to travel with a larger rucksack, you will need to pay an additional charge to book it as hand luggage.

Can I take a rucksack in addition to my hand luggage?

The amount of hand luggage you are allowed to take with you depends on the airline and your ticket. If you are travelling with Eurowings, for example, you are allowed to take a small piece of hand luggage measuring 40 x 30 x 25 cm regardless of the fare. Your large hand luggage must not exceed the specified limits of 55 x 40 x 23 cm and 8 kg. You can add this large item of hand luggage to your Basic fare for a fee. The Smart fare includes large hand luggage.

If you are travelling on a Smart fare, you can take a rucksack as a small item of hand luggage and a suitcase as large hand luggage, for example. This enables you to make the most of your baggage allowance. To be on the safe side, check your airline's hand luggage regulations before you travel.
